Social Media as an Art Form

This week we’ve talked a lot about appreciating the art in corporate video. We’ve equated artistic talent with “good video” and separated it from amateur video. In the past, we talked about the potential demand for high quality social media – Web Video @ Higher Standards. Today we wanted to take a moment and enjoy one such brilliant, high quality, artistic social media campaign that has become hugely popular.

Many have seen the latest hilarious Old Spice commercials. What you may not know is that actor, Isaiah Mustafa, has taken that same charm and wit to YouTube with a series of video responses to Twitter postings. He custom records hilarious responses to fans’ Tweets. The viewership is through the roof and the media campaign is wildly successful.

What is ground-breaking to note is the excellent production quality. Here is one of the first great examples of capturing the same quality and feel of the TV commercial and replicating that across a series of social networking videos. The series feels like a never-ending continuation of the commercials. They have a full production crew, professional lighting and sound, and the writing is superb. Here is a link to an interview with the Team Behind the Old Spice Commercials.

It is encouraging to see a hugely successful viral campaign that shows an appreciation for the art of good video. We applaud this campaign and hope to see many more like it in the future. But for now, take a moment on a Friday and have a laugh – maybe send Mr. Mustafa a Tweet.
